Okay for single use, 21 Jun 2010

I tried to cut some porcelain tiles with an electric tile saw without much success. Unfortunately the recommended machines are into the hundreds of pounds. For boring holes for pipes what to do? Well for single use these are fine and cheap to replace. The diamond cutting pointy ones from elsewhere blunted within 3 mins with only a mild indentation for your effort.

I need to cut two 32mm holes in some newly tiled studded wall to fit shower pipes.
I bought this thinking it would be easy enough to use accurately (following the instructions on the accompanying instructions).
Fortunately, I decided to practise on a scrap tile before attempting cutting the fixed tiles because it was nigh on impossible to hold the tool in one place and would have ruined my handiwork.
If I'd seen the two previous reviews, I would have followed their advice and used a block of wood to act as a guide for the tool.... a great idea... why the hell couldn't the manufacturer have given similair information.
For what it's worth, I took more radical action, cutting off the shaft, carefully drilling the centre of the hole saw out and tapping the hole to accomodate the arbour of a standard HSS hole saw.
I now have a tool which cuts perfect holes in tiles and can be kept with my other hole saws and all I have to do is drill a pilot hole with a suitably sized masonary bit to allow the centre drill in my abour to keep the hole saw concentric when cutting the hole.
This is obviously too much work for the average DIY'er but if Silverline had simply accomodated a masonary centre drill in their design, it would be a great product.

Very reasonable price. ideal for the occasional DIY job, eg tile drilling, where longevity/ruggedness is not an issue. The absence of a pilot drill makes it difficult to keep the saw steady as it tends to jump. I got round this by using a piece of wood, predrilled to 32mm, as a guide. The hole saw I received had a small gap in the ring (which was not an issue as far as drilling the tile was concerned) so I have given it only 3 stars.

Good product, but you need to make a jig out of wood, to keep it centre.
Bore the same OD in the wood as the cutter Outside Diam, use and tape to tile in the correct
position, when cutting use water to cool cutter.

Lovely big soft jigsaw pieces to play with, the numbers/letters/shapes in these end up a bit loose so if you are building a dice for example the figures will fall out of the centre but its still good fun.

This was a real "shot in the dark" as I had no knowledge whatsoever of the performance capabilities of this type and size of hole cutter. However the nature of the job was such that it was going to be my only option. The cutter seems fairly cheaply made and "in use" the oversized guard feels a little unweildy. However with a bit of trial and error with the drill speed it did cut reasonably well. The only drawback is the ear shattering noise produced as the cutting tip scratches it's way through the ceramic. If you hate the noise made by fingernails scratching a blackboard then don't even think about using this!!
All in all a cheap but effective tool that will have limited life but is probably worth the money since, as in my case, it may be the only way to get the particular result you need.

The Porclian tiles kept cracking in half and because we had bought them the year before we were really worried we would not have enough tiles for job ! Did not really want to spend that much on a tile cutter. But we are so happy we did does fantastic job . Very good quality. No more cracked tiles !

Excellent product, highly recommend. Makes perfect cuts even mitred and angled upto 45 degrees. Water pump system is superb, you don't get wet from any spray at all. Only downside is it's a bit of a heavy beast!
